Shawnee Kansas Residents Vote Down Community Center Proposal

May 21, 2019

The results are in from the mail ballot in Shawnee, KS. The voters overwhelmingly rejected a property tax increase to spend $38 million on a new community center. This community center would have directly competed against tax-paying health clubs in Johnson County. 72% of the voters said no to the tax increase. The Kansas Health and Fitness Association worked directly with citizen groups, including funding assistance, to defeat this measure.

KHFA opposes the use of tax dollars to build facilities that compete directly with for-profit, tax-paying clubs. Cities and Counties have more important uses for tax dollars than building elaborate health clubs that often continue to be a drain on tax dollars after they are constructed.
